The Blocktrades Contest | The Positive Steemians Club launch party

So here is my entry for The Blocktrades Scholarship Contest.

Rather unconventional as my entry is a recording of one of my ‘radio shows’ on MSP Waves – but creating new and continually evolving radio shows is a big part of what I do on Steem.

I have been making shows since January. They are for me significant creative endeavours.

I have developed several show formats over the 60+ shows I have produced so far including The Alternative Lifestyle Show, My Life In 8 Songs, Here Comes The News, Use Case Radio – as well as one-offs like The Steemfest3 After Party.

Each show takes me between one and two days to put together for the planning, researching and finding guests. Interviewing guests has been the cornerstone of my show format. Partly to provide interesting content, partly to give people visibility for their ideas and projects, and partly because it is a fantastically enjoyable way to get to know the people of Steem – over 400 so far.

I have chosen The Positive Steemians Club launch party episode both because it is one of the two shows that fall in the contest period and because it illustrates the essence of what I am so keen to do on the show – to accentuate the positives of Steem. Positive people, positive projects, positive wins.

Twenty lines, oh boy!  What else do I do.

I founded and run the A Dollar A Day charitable giving project. It is what I am most proud of. It has added a whole massive new dimension to Steem for me. It has given me a perspective on the world I would never have had without Steem. Almost US$ 5000 raised and donated to 20 projects around the world since I started the project in May this year. It is a true witness to the power of Steem.

More recently I have established SteemClub-UK to give Steem a much needed boost in the UK. There are barely 100 active steemians in the UK. Targeting 1000 by the end of 2019 through events, meetups, talks, promotions.

I do, and I have done, quite a bit else but I can’t fit that in 20 lines or thereabouts.

Do I meet the entry criteria. Tick on all counts. Posting daily between my three accounts – @pennsif, @adollaraday, @steemclub-uk. Comment regularly. Never used a bidbot.

That’s it. That’s me. That’s what I have to offer.

And the penguin? I used to be a penguin catcher. But that’s another story…

Steem has been good to me – 5 ways I am trying to give back

In the 18 months I have been on the platform steem has given me a lot.

I’ve learnt so many useful skills. I’ve met so many interesting people. I’ve done so many things I never thought I would. I’ve even earnt a tidy pile of steem tokens.

Most of all I have had my mind opened to the whole wide world. And all the people that live there.

The world is wondrous place – particularly when you get to know the residents of steem.

As a hobby, as a business, as a social network, as a place for personal development, or even just as a place to hang out and pass the time of day steem has been a full time giver. And I have been a full time taker of every opportunity that steem has sent my way.

But it cannot be all take and no give.

In these bloodied crypto days steem needs us. It needs us to do some giving not taking.

So I am revisiting, reviewing, re-evaluating what I do for steem.

Can I do what I do better, smarter, harder, faster. Can I do it with more brains than mourn.

This is what I do…

1.  A Dollar A Day @adollaraday

This is a charitable giving project that I got up and running in May. Steemians donate 1 SBD a day and I pool those SBDs to give out larger donations every day to currently 16 carefully vetted projects in 9 countries round the world. A Dollar A Day is on target to give out US$ 5000 by the end of the year.

2.  SteemClub-UK @steemclub-uk

I started this project more recently when I could only find well under 100 active steemians in the UK – barely more than 1 in a million of population. We’ve kicked off with a well attended first virtual meetup, discussions about mini-meetups and regional events are underway, I have set up an auto-voter with 5000 SP so far to give out a little something to every active steemian in the UK. The UK steem community is starting to come together… and there is so much more to come.

3.  MSP Waves @mspwaves

Through various name and format variations I have been hosting shows on MSP Waves since January. I have done The Alternative Lifestyle Show, My Life In 8 Songs, Here Comes The News, Use-Case Radio, The Random Radio Show… All have had a common theme of interviewing the people of steem. That is my radio thing. Now to the tune of around 400 interviewees. That is 400 steemians for whom I have provided a little bit of visibility and promotion for themselves and their projects. And we’re still going strong.

4.  Fundition

I work for Fundition, steem’s very own crowdfunding platform, doing Founder Support. That is I help people with preparing their project proposals and giving them ongoing assistance. So far I have helped several dozen founders with projects which have gone on to raise thouands of dollars. Fundition keeps on working for the good.

5.  And coming next… the Positive Steemians Club

I am always cooking up new ideas to try out. Some work, some don’t. There are still so many areas I would like to help with – improving onboarding and retention, growing the steem community in South America, developing the homesteading and prepping communities, encouraging more young people on to steem… the list is endless. Alas my time and resources are not. So I have to be selective. Last Thursday I threw a new idea up in the air to see if it would stick – the Positive Steemians Club. Giving air time to those great steemians with positive ideas to promote and improve steem. I hope this project has legs.

And one last thing, I buy steem. When I can afford it and when someone is selling. I do all my trades person to person to lessen or avoid fees and exchange costs as much as possible. If you are selling buzz me…

So that is what I am doing to give back to the community, and to help grow steem.

One person. Never enough. Giving it my best shot.

SteemClub-UK : say hello to these new UK steemians @ 21 November 2018

I have just posted the latest list of active UK steemians on the @steemclub-uk account.

We are now 143 in number, and growing steadily.

What will be critical now, particularly in these difficult crypto times, is retention. We must do our utmost to keep all the current UK steemians onboard and active.

This is really, really important with newcomers to the platform.

I will therefore be putting out this Welcome post every week or so as I come across new UK steemians.

Please do visit their posts, upvote them, leave comments and make them feel welcome. We really want them to stick around.

So here are this week’s newcomers…

@ebookwriter – from Halifax

Tony joined Steem last month and describes himself as an ex-electrician, a dreamer and a writer. He also served in the REME corps of the British Army.

You can read his introductory post here…

https://steemit.com/introducingmyself/@ebookwriter/introduceyourself-and-and-looking-to-connect-with-fellow-creatives

And his latest post here…

https://steemit.com/life/@ebookwriter/songs-that-speak-of-the-creative-s-struggle-part-8

@earthkind – based in London

Shawn originally started on Steem in January 2018. But he only made 3 posts then before going quiet until a few days ago.

Now he has made a new introductory DTube video…

https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@earthkind/ncfb02wz

Amongst other things Shawn is a vegan.

@elizabethharvey – in the hills of Wales

Elizabeth is a 38 year old mother of three based in my neck of the woods in the mountains of Wales.

She just joined Steem yesterday and here is her introductory post…

https://steemit.com/fitness/@elizabethharvey/finally-i-m-in

Elizabeth is a former model and now a keen runner.

Other worthy mentions…

It is good to see video expert **Rudolfo Crisafulli @rod.crisafulli** back active on steem after a break of a couple of months. His latest post looks very interesting…

Why do we all need to be prepared to make video?!

I have just this evening found **@susanlo** via a @stephenkendal post. Susan is from Hong Kong but currently studying in London. Here is her latest post about how she met @stephenkendal at the first UK DigiByte meetup in London…

My Stories #29 – FIRST DigiByte UK meetup! Let’s meet its founder and @stephenkendal !

We have now also started to add ex-pats to the UK Steem list. **@minismallholding** living in Australia is the latest ex-pat to come onboard with SteemClub-UK.

That’s all for today.

Let me know if you spot any other new UK steemians around and about.

In the meantime please do visit / comment / upvote especially the newcomers mentioned in this post.

Thank you.

SteemClub-UK : weekly curation for music @ 18 November 2018

As mentioned in my post Steem UK : 10 Things Going On with Steem in the UK @ 15 November 2018 I am keen to try out some weekly curation posts to promote content creators in the UK.

First up I am going to start with music.

My recent music hunt found 16 active steem musicians in the UK. The list is repeated below for reference – if you know any more not on the list please let me know.

Some of the 16 musicians are more active than others, but there is still plenty of good UK steem music to chose from.

I will keep this curation simple to start. I have listened to every track UK steem musicians have put out via Steemit and DSound in the past week and I have chosen five that take my fancy.

These reflect my musical preferences as much as quality of the music, but it is a start…

Holding On – by Broken Ocean – @davidfar & @darrenclaxton

This steem pairing of @davidfar in Iran and @darrenclaxton in England as Broken Ocean is producing magical tracks that are making waves on the steem music scene.

https://steemit.com/dsound/@darrenclaxton/20181117t231453893z-holding-on-brand-new-music-by-broken-ocean-aka-davidfar–darrenclaxton

Happy by Conflux @nakedverse & Alison

Kent based Deggsy @nakedverse together with the lyrics and vocals by Alison regularly make some lovely music as Conflux.

https://steemit.com/dsound/@nakedverse/20181116t174414782z-happy

York – On The Beach by @nickyhavey featuring TigerPaw

Trance Drum and Bass is not my usual place in the musical space but this track got me mooovin…

Train from Marylebone by @skaarl

This is a funky little track and it features train announcement samples. How could a former trainspotter resist this one…

https://steemit.com/dsound/@skaarl/20181112t172253272z-train-from-marylebone

Little Blue Flame by @theturtleproject

The Turtle Project is from my neck of the woods in west Wales. I always love the vibe of his music. It just chills.

https://steemit.com/dsound/@theturtleproject/20181112t161610053z-little-blue-flame

They are my five picks for the week, but I will throw  in a couple more UK musical wildcards that well worth a read and an upvote…

Let’s sing! by @donatello

Just make a post with Let’s Sing in the title and you can get 100 Donatello Club digital cards…

https://steemit.com/busy/@donatello/let-s-sing

Nick Harper Interview by @acousticguitar aka @camuel

Very interesting interview with Nick Harper. He is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist, son of folk musician Roy Harper and past member of the English New Wave band Squeeze.

Steem UK : 10 Things Going On with Steem in the UK @ 15 November 2018

SteemFest is over, and the Steem price is on a downward slide.

This seems like a good time to redouble efforts to get moving on promoting Steem in the UK.

I am going to give this my best shot and I hope others in the UK will join me on the journey.

Here’s where I have got to so far. Comments, suggestions, ideas, criticisms welcome.

1. Steem UK Virtual Meetup

The second Steem UK Virtual Meetup is scheduled for 2 weeks from today (29 November). It will be 8pm – 11pm UK time on MSP Waves.

Do please come along and join in with that if you want to make Steem great in Britain.

The recording of the first meetup is available if you missed it…

2. SteemClub-UK branding?

This came about rather by chance as the accounts @steemuk and @steem-uk had both been taken. So I grabbed @steemclub-uk instead.

Now the Club idea is growing on me. More on this idea to follow…

3. Auto-Voter account @steemclub-uk

I have set up @steemclub-uk on SteemAuto to auto-vote UK active steemians.

I have delegated 2000SP to the account to get it going and @steevc, @article61 and @livinguktaiwan have already kindly added SP delegations.

This will take some trial and error and discussion and debate, but I am gradually adding everyone that is on the active UK steemians list. Everyone should start to see small votes appear on their posts once a day.

This will be developed further and can be discussed on 29 November.

The account is now up to 2300 SP. It would be great if we can get it to 5000 SP by the next meetup.

4. Curation trail on @steemclub-uk

A curation trail is also set on @steemclub-uk if you can spare a bit of voting power to support UK steemians.

5. Curation project

I am going to start some manual curation for UK steemians. Still working on the details.

Music is first on my list…

6. SteemClub-UK Discord Server

I have just set this up. I primarily see this as being useful for organising events and meetups, but maybe more…

I will start sending out invites over the next few days.

7. Regional Events

We discussed in the first Virtual Meetup the idea of having four regional events each focussing on a different theme.

These are targeted for the first few months of 2019.

These are still subject to change but currently we are considering…

  • in the Midlands – a music related event
  • in London and the South East – a food related event
  • in Wales and the South West – a film related event
  • in the North – a business / crypto related event

Check out this post for more details on each of these…

We will be discussing more on 29 November, and hopefully soon in the Discord server, but if anyone would like to get involved in any of these events please comment below or message me on Discord (Pennsif#9921).

8. Mini-Meetups

I have heard mention of various potential mini-meetups around the country.

If you are organising any gatherings and are open to other steemians joining in let me know and we can share the details.

9. Charity Projects

As many of you might know I am involved in the A Dollar A Day charitable giving project on Steem and with Fundition.io the steem crowdfunding platform. Through both of these I see the power of good that Steem can do.

I would really love to see some charitable projects supported by Steem in the UK.

If you have any ideas contact me…

10. Weekly Update

To keep the ball rolling and to make sure everyone can stay in the loop that wants to be there I will be putting out a weekly update like this of what is going on in the UK Steem world.

If you have any events, meetups, contests etc you would like to be included let me know.

Targets…

The UK is the home of great projects like @promo-steem, @oracle-d and @adollaraday ( 😃 ).

Steem has great potential in the UK. It will take effort, commitment, community and a fair dash of hard work.

But Steem is special. It presents an opportunity we may never have in our lifetimes again.

We must not let the opportunity slip through our fingers.

Now is the time to start making Steem great in Britain.

Anyone for 1000 active Steemians in the UK by the end of 2019?

Steemians in the UK – currently 133

These are all the active steemians currently identified in the UK. If you know anyone else that should be added please post in the comments or message me on Discord (@Pennsif#9921).

Ex-Pats are now being included on the list – are you a Brit living abroad that wants to see Steem flourish in the old country…?

Steem UK : introducing @steemclub-uk to support UK content creators

As one small step to help support and grow the Steem community in the UK I have set up the steem account @steemclub-uk.

I am delegating a large chunk of my available steempower to this account and have set up an auto-voter to start giving small votes to UK based content creators.

I have delegated 500 SP to test it works. Once all is going okay I will increase this to 2000 SP.

Initially I plan to give all 120+ UK steemians a 10% vote per day.

I will monitor this over the next week or so to see if this percentage is sustainable.

I am trying this out as a personal commitment initially but if anyone would like to delegate to the account feel free.

Options for voting percentages

Once it is established there are a number of options to be considered for determining who gets what voting percentage.

  • Should everyone get an equal vote regardless of other factors?
  • Should people be rewarded with greater voting percentages if they are active in promoting steem in the UK?
  • Should people be rewarded with greater voting percentages according to how much they have delegated to the account?
  • Or should some combination of all three measures be employed?

If activity in promoting steem is a factor how should that be determined?

Thoughts and opinions welcome on this…

Curation Trail

I have also set up a Curation Trail on the @steemclub-uk account if anyone fancies supporting that with their vote.

SteemClub-UK Discord Server

I have also set up a Discord Server to help with networking and the organisation of events and meetups.

More on that to follow shortly.

Next Steem UK Virtual Meetup

The next Steem UK Virtual Meetup has been set for Thursday 29 November.

This will take place 8pm – 11pm UK time during my radio show on MSP Waves.

Everyone is welcome to join in.

UK Steem : UK musicians on Steem, DSound & DTube

As part of promoting Steem in the UK an idea has been mooted of having some sort of Steem musicians event.

I wondered therefore how many UK based musicians there are on the Steem blockchain.

Here are all the ones I have found so far. Anyone know of any others?

@article61 & @darrenclaxton – it might be worth connected with all these UK steem musicians as you are interested in a potential steem music event in the Midlands.

Just a reminder the next Steem UK Virtual Meetup will be on Thursday 29 November, 8pm – 11pm UK time. Hope you can come along…

* Steem UK – latest list of active steemians & the next Virtual Meetup – Thursday 29 November

Steem UK Virtual Meetup #1 – what comes next – 4 regional events? Copy

That was really, really, really great.

I am happy, I am inspired, I am believing we can make steem great in Britain.

Thank you everyone who came along to the first Steem UK Virtual Meetup on MSP Waves last night.

Thank you everyone who came on to talk, thank you everyone who joined in the audience and pitched in on the chat.

And thank you everyone who couldn’t attend but sent messages of support – including Matt @starkerz and Dylan @anarcotech of @oracle-d who are doing great work for steem in Indonesia at the moment.

The goal of the meetup, as well as getting to know each other and networking, was to come up with concrete ideas and plans to start promoting steem in the UK.

And we did.

The seeds of 4 events and activities across the country started to germinate in the meetup.

There is still a way to go but if we could move forward with 4 regional events around the country – in the North, in the Midlands, in Wales & the South West, and in London & the South East – we could achieve maximum impact and maximum participation.

Could anything happen in Scotland as well?

The Midlands – Music

In the Midlands Dan @article61 and Darren @darrenclaxton are interested in developing a musical event ideally based around the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies in Nottingham.

Nick @nickyhavey has been developing a Bluffer’s Guide to Cryptocurrency for Musicians that could be molded into a package for onboarding new bands and musicians as part of the event.

A suggestion was made that this could be involved into a program to help new young musicians – maybe a Steem Youth Music Project…?

Unfortunately @atomcollector was not able to make it to the meeting but I had spoken to him earlier and he is interested in this too.

@ashtv is also interested in the project. He is a professional videographer and makes music videos.

Is there anyone else in the Midlands, or beyond, who would like to get involved in a music project to promote steem?

The North – Crypto & Business

For an event in the north @cryptocurator put forward the suggestion of holding some sort of crypto / business meeting or conference – possibly at Manchester University.

Is there anyone in the north region who would be interested in working with @cryptocurator on this sort of event?

London & the South East – Food ?

There are already fairly regular social meetups in London as the numbers are sufficient to sustain these.

The idea was put forward that some sort of food related event might be doable in the London & South East region.

Professional food vlogger @allasyummyfood is based there as well as keen food vloggers like @rea.

@redrica is going to be meeting a number of steemians from the London area at SteemFest next week. She offered to discuss ideas with them and see what interest there is.

Wales & the South West – Film ?

One idea for this region is to hold an event connecting film and steem – probably in Bristol, ideally tying in with the Film Department at the University of Bristol.

I picked up on this idea after the Film & Steem special show last week. @basilmarples and @ashtv are involved in film in the UK. I am hoping @brian-rhodes, @dougkarr, @ericvancewalton, @juliakponsford and @lifesacircus might be able to pitch in ideas from across the Atlantic…

@basilmarples and I are also bouncing around the idea of a short, humorous steem promotion film for the UK.

Anyone interested in getting involved in a film event or project?

I am wondering about broadening it out to vlogging and DTube? @camuel, @slayerkm, @louisthomas – any thoughts on this?

Targeting niche communities

An idea for targeting specific communities was put forward by @raj808.

He is interesting in working with creative writing groups and courses in universities.

Niche community targeting has a lot of merit. It is an idea that could be developed in a number of areas – maybe homeschoolers, or vegans, or homesteaders…

A buddy system

Ambitious or what?

This might all seem rather ambitious with our limited numbers.

My feeling, at this stage of the game, is that steem needs to go for hitting sixes out of the park. Just grabbing the odd single each over isn’t going to win the match.

Or if you don’t like cricket, we need to think big… or go home.

We have in the UK a bit over 100 active steemians. We are just a little more than one in a million, but not much.

We are unique and we have something really quite special in steem.

Do we want to let it slip through our fingers?

I don’t.

Steem UK Virtual Meetup #1 – what comes next – 4 regional events?

A suggestion was made that we should develop a ‘Buddy System’ or mentoring to help onboarding and improve retention.  I think it was @teamhumble that mentioned this.

@ura-soul is also working on improving the signup and onboarding process.
