SoS Daily News : news about the State of Steem @ 15 January 2019

Not so much news to report today after the big Hivemind release yesterday.

Although the STEEM price does seem to be staging something of an upward breakout from its usual BTC coat-tailing.

Maybe the positive buzz of the Hivemind announcement is having an effect…

A New Full Public Node Arrives from @themarkymark

The steem platform is rather short of public nodes. Reliance on the Steemit Inc nodes has been a centralisation issue, and has had a heavy cost impact for Steemit Inc.

Yesterday’s Hivemind release, and its reduction in memory requirements for nodes, is a key part of solving the node shortage problem.

Right on queue, top 30 witness @themarkymark is the first to release a new full public node.

Hopefully there will be more to follow soon.

If you would you like to know more about the current nodes you can check @holger80’s regular Full Node Update posts…

SOS Daily News : all you need to know about the State of Steem @ 19 December 2018

MIRA is coming, MIRA is coming…

Steemit Inc have just announced that the development work on RocksDB is rocking along and they will be introducing MIRA (Multi Index RocksDB Adapter) to bring the memory requirements down for nodes significantly.

This will apply for API Nodes and Witness Nodes so costs for running both should fall considerably in the next few months.

Community API Nodes here we come…

The State of Steem Forum #2 – Technology

Tomorrow Thursday 8pm -11pm on MSP Waves we have the second State of Steem Forum – this week focusing in on Technology.

We will be looking at Nodes, RocksDB, SMTs, RC Delegation Pools, Account creation etc.

Speaking on the forum so far we have @blocktrades,, @helo, @starkerz, @themarkymark, @therealwolf, @upheaver, @ura-soul and @yabapmatt. A number of witnesses and developers such as @gtg and @shredz7 will be contributing through text chat.

Alongside the forum I have produced a skeleton action plan to serve as a starting point for discussion…

Patreon, SubscribeStar and

You have probably picked up on the Patreon rumpus as many non-mainstream creators have been booted off.

Many of those moved over to the alternative creator funding site SubscribeStar.

That didn’t last long as payment processors such as PayPal and Stripe threatened to pull the plug if SubscribeStar didn’t eject these Alt-Creators.

Crypto-journalist, and @hardfork-series team member, Naomi Brockwell @skycorridors posted a video on this…

New kid on the block has come forward as a censorship resistant crypto-alternative for creators. Bitbacker currently takes BTC, BCH, and SmartCash but not yet STEEM.

On my first day on Twitter for umpteen years I spotted Bitbacker announcing their site revamp, and saying Steem is on their short list to add. I added a comment to support Steem and Bitbacker liked it and started following me. In my Twitter naivety I’m taking that as a good sign 😃

If you have a Twitter account maybe hop over to @Bitbacker_io and tell them how good STEEM would be for their platform…

MSP Waves Producer Job

As many of you now I spend a lot of time hosting shows on MSP Waves. It is a great part of the Steem Community to get involved with and support.

There is a now an opportunity to help out at MSP by becoming a Show Producer on @globocop’s Friday night CHAOS Show.

I started my MSP career as co-host on one of @globocop’s shows and he is a great mentor. If you fancy getting involved on the Steem Waves this will be a great place to start…

In the meantime…

Read. Absorb. Digest. Discuss. Act. Together.

Become part of the Steem (R)Evolution.

Five ways Steem has changed my life, and what comes next…

In my 50+ years I have been involved in many causes, many organisations, many communities and many new activities. Some for shorter, some for longer.

But of all of these, the past 18 months on Steem has been more intense, more condensed and more all round impactful on my life than any other of my past endeavours.

Steem has taught me, steem has changed me, steem has made a indelible mark on my life…

1. The World of Crypto

Steem has been my entry point to the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchains.

As well as learning about Steem itself it has prompted me to explore other parts of the crypto world. I am seeing clearly that this is a world with many, many, many possibilities.

With every crypto stone I turn over another idea sprouts up before me. Fertile lands are just over the horizon.

2. Justice, Equality & A Dollar A Day

The single most important part of Steem for me is without a doubt A Dollar A Day.

Running this charitable giving organisation on Steem has opened my eyes so, so wide.

Talking directly to the people at the other end of the line, hearing how they live, about the problems they face and the solutions they are trying to implement has changed my outlook on the world big time and a half.

I have connected so directly with the people I work with. It is difficult not to have a heightened sense of responsibility to get involved and do the very, very best I can to help.

And A Dollar A Day has helped, a little at least. Even in these difficult days A Dollar A Day has managed to raise approaching US$ 5000 since the project started in May.

This has clearly demonstrated the potential of the Steem blockchain to do good in the world. I do so hope A Dollar A Day can continue to grow and develop in its present form, in its present place.

3. Radio Shows

Becoming a show host on MSP Waves has been my biggest personal revelation from being involved in Steem.

I had never hosted radio shows before, and I would never have dreamed of doing so if not for Steem.

And it has been such a fascinating and enjoyable part of my steem life. Since starting in January, through the various incarnations, I have put out almost 70 shows.

What’s more, on those shows I have now interviewed around 400 steemians. That has been a joy, a pleasure, a privilege, an honour to get to know so many people on the platform in this way.

4. Vegetarian & Vegan

Back in March I interviewed @teamsteem on my Alternative Lifestyle Show on MSP Waves. We talked at length about his choice to be vegan. Then a few weeks later I brought together 10 steem vegans for a vegan special edition of the show. This covered all the different angles of why people become vegan… health, ethics, environment etc.

I had never been a big meat eater. But since those shows I have not eaten any. I am totally vegetarian.

Going full vegan, particularly having our own chickens, has been a longer, and more windy journey. But the ultimate goal is coming close.

I feel healthier for it.

5. Sleep

The other four have been big positives. But it would be dishonest for me not to include this rather more negative impact of steem.

With a 24 hour round the world community I commonly find myself chatting on Discord into the wee small hours with people in earlier timezones.

And there is always more to do. Posts to write, comments to make, shows to listen to, interviews to arrange, donations to send. I set myself steem targets each day – and I try to get them done before going to sleep.

This is not good. I have written about it before. I know it has got to change.

It will, I am trying harder.

So Steem has changed my life. Mostly for the better.

Whatever comes next these past 18 months have been fruitful.

I will wish for many months more…

The United Kingdom of Steem : how do we grow the numbers?

Yesterday I put up a post to build a list of all active steemians in Britain.

The result was not great – but also not too surprising.

There are still a few additions coming in – but so far the list has reached 81.

A few of those are on the edge of still being active, so that figure is not far off that magic one in a million finding from my previous cursory inpection of active steem numbers. The population of the UK is currently 66.6 million.

I had very much hoped that we would reach 100, but even with the stragglers still trickling in it doesn’t look too hopeful.

So it is what it is. There are less than one hundred active steemians in Britain.

It cannot stay this way. The numbers must go up.

There will not be some massive marketing campaign swooping in from steemit inc to boost the takeup of steem in the UK.

It is up to us – this happy band of 81 – to make it work, to make it grow, to make it prosper.

So what is the plan?  How do we get one?  Where do we go from here?

We need to talk. We need to work together.

Who’s up for the challenge?  Who’s just here for the ride?

A great big UK meetup would be good. But time, distance, money, logistics… That will need to come later.

Possibly regional meetings first. Luckily we are quite evenly spread. But they will still take time to organise.

That is time we may not have. The next six months are vital.

So let’s go virtual. I have a radio show. Thursday evenings.

With the clocks going back on Sunday, the show will be a good time for Brits … 8pm – 11pm UK time.

Thursday 1 November – The United Kingdom of Steem, Let’s Make It Great Show on MSP Waves.

Who wants to come on the show to brainstorm, thrash out some ideas, make some plans and get ready to rumble…

Here are a few possibles to get our balls rolling…

  • Regional meetups
  • A social media promotion campaign
  • UK steem merchandise
  • UK steem leaflets
  • Targeting specific sectors like independent musicians, film makers, gamers…
  • Working with small charities to fundraise to show benefits of steem
  • Students ??
  • Working to promote specific dApps like @eroche’s Let’s Eat
  • Targeting niche / alternative groups like homeschoolers, vegans, alternative therapists…

Who’s up for it?

This is the list of active steemians in the UK so far…

Pennsif’s Progress – It is good to be on the other side of the mic sometimes…

I love making radio shows. I love interviewing guests.

I had done neither before I came to steem.

Since I joined MSP Waves Radio, and since I started broadcasting in January I have hosted around 70 shows and interviewed well over 300 steemians.

Interviewing guests on shows has been a most excellent way to get to know people from all around the world and all around steem. I learn so much from this.

This week I was delighted to be invited to be a guest on two other shows.

On Thursday immediately after my show I hopped over to join @fracasgrimm on his Chronic and Coffee show on GreenHouseRadioOnline on the Canna-Curate Discord server. I very much enjoyed that. You can hear the interview here…

Then on Saturday @gregorypatrick invited me on to The Decentralized News Hour run on the Information War Discord server. Along with @nochains1 and Greg we had a great discussion ranging across many subjects including homeschooling, multilingual education and the mainstream media. Greg’s post for the show is here…

Or you can watch directly on YouTube…

As well doing these two interviews my Thursday show was a special one.

It was my first go at an open forum style show. Fifteen people involved in radio shows, podcasting and social broadcasting across the steem ecosystem came together to talk, exchange ideas and discuss ways to grow what we all do.

You can listen to the recording of the show here…

It was great to hear from all these people. I was inspired by the show.

This encouraged me to make this post in case I can help anyone…

I think there is a great future for social broadcasting on the steem ecosystem. With new technologies, new content creators, new show formats, and loads of new ideas coming through I am really looking forward to what comes next…

Pennsif’s Progress – As Steve said, “Do one thing well”

Do not try to do everything. Do one thing well. - Steve Jobs

We have spent the last couple of days moving two of our daughters to start at their new universities.

These are big days. These are important life points. These are times that are a-changing.

Long drivings mean long thinkings.

Right now I am sure I have so many pies, in so many ovens, with so many fingers in them, that none of them are tasting quite as good as they might.

And I am in danger of falling asleep at the wheel.

I cannot do everything that I would like to on steem. I need to focus. I need to do one thing well.

Or at least cut down a bit.

I know what makes the most difference – that is my work with A Dollar A Day.

I know what makes the least.

So I will no longer be broadcasting The Alternative Lifestyle Show on Fridays.

I will pick up the best bits of that and merge them into my longer and stronger Thursday show that currently runs with the moniker of Here Comes The News. But that might change.

With all the guests I have on my radio shows they take many, many hours to organise and put together.

So dropping one will free me a good chunk of time to concentrate more on A Dollar A Day. That can only be for the better.

Thank you everyone that has been part of The Alternative Lifestyle Show – both listeners and guests.

Since the show started in January I have had well over a hundred great guests on the show, who have given some extremely interesting interviews. I will miss you all. But not too far. Just move back one day and you can be on the Thursday show.

Thank you and good night.

Pennsif’s Progress #563 – Don’t blame the media, become the media

In 1995 I set up one of the first online community networks in Britain.

The network grew quickly.

To begin with it had what’s on listings, articles about local history, lists of local facilities like doctors and pharmacies and the like. I added a guestbook. And then I added the first service in Britain for finding old schoolfriends. The network grew even faster and started to attract an audience of ex-pats from around the world as well.

Results from local football games, and other sports reports were added. We started dabbling in match reports from main football team in the city.

The network grew even more.

By 1996/97 there was a growing number of these local community networks around the country. A meeting was called at Sheffield University for organisers, coordinators and editors of these networks.

I went. One lecture changed everything. The topic of local news was discussed. Real news had seemed too difficult for my network – you needed real journalists and all that jazz. That was best left to the professionals – the newspapers, the radio, the TV. They had real journalists who knew the law and wouldn’t get sued. They must be doing it right. Trust them, they are journalists

But the speaker at the conference had other ideas. He talked about ‘citizen journalists‘. That sounded interesting. I fancied being one of them.

“Don’t the media. Become the media.” he said.

He knew what the community networks had at hand. With the web, with the internet, with our local online networks we had something very powerful.

We could make the news. We could become citizen journalists. We could become media. All by ourselves.

And so it came to pass. I became a chief editor. We got lucky and got European money. We contracted a real newspaper editor to train us. We employed real journalists as well. We built up a team. We went to courts and councils. We wrote the news. Lots of it. We became the primary online media for a whole chunk of the Midlands.

The traditional media didn’t like it. One little bit. They banned their journalists from reporting on us or even mentioning us.

We tricked them and got round the ban. Then we employed their journalists. They got more annoyed. They tried to buy us.

I declined.

Then social media came along. People started to look in other places. I moved to another place 200 miles away.

My little network grew to have a third of a million visitors at its peak. By then my focus was shifting elsewhere.

Wasn’t that just fun while it lasted. We were pioneers. We met Prince Charles. We arranged marriages. We got on page 3 of the Sun. That was fun too.

I learnt a lot. I learnt to be a journalist. I learnt to write news. I learnt to make news.

I learnt not to take no for an answer. I learnt to make our own stories. To set our own agenda.

I learnt to be the media.

And now I am back here again. In the same place, but in a different space. The crypto space.

The ‘real news’ is fake news. It is dumb news. It is daft news. And for the most part it is absolutely irrelevant news.

With the blockchain we can make the news ourselves. We can be the media again.

Here Comes The News. Tune in to my new news show on Thursdays, 8pm – 11pm UTC, MSP Waves Radio.

Pennsif’s Progress #607 – 6 months on and the radio waves to everyone

In just under an hour I will be on air again with another episode of ‘The Alternative Lifestyle Show‘.

Amazingly I have now being doing the show for 6 months.

It really has been a super experience. I have learnt so much. I have gained confidence week by week.

And I have spoken to so many fantastic people of steem.

Together with my other show, My Life In 8 Songs, I have calculated that I have now interviewed almost 200 people.

When I joined steemit back last June I never dreamed I would become an internet radio show host. I came to steem to blog about prepping and homesteading and hopefully earn enough to buy a solar PV system.

It was in the first Homesteaders Slack group a month or so after I joined that I met @crazybgadventure, a British ex-pat living in Bulgaria. He had just started a radio show on the newly formed MSP Waves Radio on the new PAL Discord, and he was looking for guests. I volunteered.

Unfortunately CrazyBG had to drop out of the radio show before I got to be on, but a week or two later I heard @ma1neevent was looking for guests for his Wednesday interview show.

That then was my first time live on MSP Waves with Ma1ne and I loved it.

The bug had bitten.

The Alternative Lifestyle Show

It wasn’t long before I had my idea for a show for the homesteading and prepping community accepted by @globocop and @r0nd0n at MSP Waves.

The Alternative Lifestyle Show was born and heading for the airwaves.

When I first thought of the show title I had planned to put brackets around the word (Alternative) as I was rapidly discovering that what might be considered alternative in the outside world is pretty much the norm on steem.

Almost by virtue of being on steem you have to have a little bit of alternative in you somewhere.

Thoughout the autumn months I worked through the technicals, got a better internet connection and built up contacts.

I was still lacking confidence but a chance encounter with my two year old self fixed that when @globocop invited me to co-host a series of 1960s music shows he was running.

That was a great soft entry into hosting a radio show.

We did about 10 weeks of that and then by the beginning of the new year I was ready to start my new show.

The Alternative Lifestyle Show debuted on MSP Waves on Friday 26 January with guests @redrica talking about homeschooling, @geordieprepper discussing prepping, @halcyondaze speaking about gardening and @thebugiq chatting about a whole bunch of other things.

@redrica, together with @ravenruis and @awesomehomestead, helped me track down guests for the first couple of months. Gradually that got easier as the show became more well known.

As the weeks rolled on the remit and the appeal of the show broadened. I have had guests talking about homeschooling, unschooling, anti-vaccinations, basic income schemes, veganism, GMOs, cannabis cultivation, dumpster diving… as well as the staples of homesteading and prepping.

The highlights for me have included the Ozarks special with @papa-pepper and a whole bunch of great steem homesteaders from the Ozark Mountains region of the USA.  The vegan special with @teamsteem, @krnel, @lenasveganliving, @ura-soul and others was an important show for me as it started me on my (almost complete) journey to becoming a vegan.

Having White Walking Feather @wwf and his Stewards of Terra Mater was an engrossing and very thought generating episode. Liberatarian Party presidential hopeful @adamkokesh was certainly a milestone interview for me. Interviewing @papa-pepper again for his second steem anniversary was another good one.

And tonight I have @surfermarly, @woman-onthe-wing, @jackdub, @makinstuff and @sir-thrive.

The show rolls on … and I am loving it !

Join me every Friday on MSP Waves, 10pm – midnight UTC.

My Life in 8 Songs – Thursday 14 June – with @darrenclaxton, @d-vine & @zipporah×278.jpg
This week’s My Life in 8 Songs has a little twist.
All three guests are musicians who write their own songs. So instead of 8 songs from the big wide musical world they are choosing 8 of their own songs.
The twist doesn’t end there. Instead of telling their whole life story each guest will be taking us through their musical journey from first discovery through learning their skills, developing their talent, growing their following to their current situation.
Darren Claxton @darrenclaxton from the UK is in the acoustic indie folk vein, D-Vine / ELLi @d-vine from Germany is more electronic and dance, and Zippy Lomax @zipporah from USA spans acoustic and electronic genres.

The shows airs from 8pm – 11pm UTC on Thursday on MSP Waves Radio.

Darren Claxton joined steem in March this year.

He is from Derbyshire in the UK.

Darren Claxton is a songwriter, musician and producer of his own music. The music he writes is often heartfelt acoustic indie folk with a sprinkling of rock and country influences, with an occasional world music flavour as heard on his track ‘Dragonfly’.

Most of all, it is his passive emotive thoughts and feelings that are delivered through that soothing vocal, and intricate guitar playing of his.

ELLi @d-vine is a female audio engineer, producer and DJ, currently located in Germany.

Since arriving on steem last November ELLi has been actively involved in many areas of the steem music scene including the Steem Music Alliance and the Steemit Music League Challenge. She has also regularly put out new tracks on DSound.

ELLi started in the underground electronic scene in Europe in 1993. She made her professional debut in Germany in 1998, and her first release on the label Risk Industrees in 1999. In 2015 she began to focus more on production and in 2017 got her certification as an audio engineer.

Zippy joined the steem platform in January.

She is based in Portland, Oregon in the USA.

As well being a musician and songstress, Zippy is a photographer, writer and illustrator. In her steemit profile she describes herself as “seeing with heart – listening with eyes – founder of The Kindness Collective”.
